ww2dbaseThe 50-RM-38 company mortars were light infantry mortars with fixed elevations (45 and 75 degrees only). Range adjustments were done by altering a sleeve that opened or closed various exhaust ports. The original design was quickly superseded by variant 50-RM-39 within months, followed by variant 50-RM-40. They were designed to be simple and light weight so that they could each be carried by a single soldier. These three variants were ultimately considered lacking, largely due to the inaccurate ranging as the result of the design. In 1941, 50-RM-41 was completed. 50-RM-41 was officially listed as a variant in the 50-RM-38 line, but it had significant design changes, some of which influenced by German 50-millimeter mortars. 50-RM-41 mortars differed from their predecessors by having barrel yokes for elevation and traverse adjustments and exhausting gasses under the muzzle via tubes. Production lasted until 1943; between 1939 and 1943, large numbers were produced. Examples of these mortars captured by the Germans during the Russo-German war were designated 5 cm Granatwerfer 205/1(r). They were also captured and used by Finnish forces. After WW2, they were supplied to forces friendly to the Soviet Union, such as North Korea and North Vietnam.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
