ww2dbaseThe Sturmgeschütz IV (SdKfz. 167), or StuG IV, self-propelled assault guns were built by mating 7.5 cm KwK 40 vehicle guns and Panzer IV chassis without the use of turrets. They were deployed largely to support infantry divisions, but the powerful guns made them effective tank destroyers as well. StuG IV assault guns were produced from Dec 1943 to May 1945, during which time 1,108 examples were built. An addition 31 units were built from damaged Panzer IV hulls.
ww2dbasePrior to the introduction of the Sturmgeschütz IV design, the German Army had already been using 75-millimeter assault guns built atop Panzer III chassis, and they were designated, plainly, Sturmgeschütz. After early 1944, the previous Sturmgeschütz assault guns were designated as Sturmgeschütz III so to differentiate the two similar weapons built on top of two different chassis designs.
