Arleigh Burke at this time was Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher's chief of staff. Bunker Hill had been in overhaul, missing the October 1944 Leyte battles by a day at the beginning of that process, and had just arrived back at Ulithi on February 7 1945. Mitscher raised his flag on Bunker Hill that day after the fleet had returned from the China Sea foray. Mitscher and Burke left Bunker Hill on May 11 1945 when she was hit by 2 suicides, which took her out of the war, with repairs at Puget Sound essentially finished on September 1 1945.
