- Three British Royal Air Force Squadrons (Nos. 71, 121 and 133) were transferred to the United States Army and redesignated as the 334, 335 and 336th Fighter Squadrons. - Alpino Bagnolini, detected by a destroyer on the previous date, was subjected to a depth charge attack in the Atlantic Ocean at 0007 hours, sustaining no damage. At 0110 hours, she surfaced, and sighted the destroyer at the range of 800 meters and that the freighter she was escorting was fully illuminated. - A lone German bomber attacked the rural town of Petworth in Sussex County, England, United Kingdom in the morning, destroying a boys' school; 23 were killed (20 of whom were children), 30 were seriously injured (24 of whom were children). - Seaplane from Japanese submarine I-25 dropped incendiary bombs on a forest in Oregon, United States. No fire was reported. ww2dbase [Japanese Attacks on the Continental United States | Oregon | CPC]
- Japanese submarine I-25 surfaced off Cape Blanco, Oregon in the early morning darkness. Warrant Officer Nobuo Fujita took off in I-25’s Yokosuka E14Y “Glen” floatplane and flew inland from the Cape Blanco lighthouse and dropped two incendiary bombs with minimal results.
