Two Chinese regiments from 38th Division was to provide support for the Americans as necessary. • US submarine Bowfin (SS-287) sank the Japanese army cargo ship Tsukikawa Maru, off Halmahera Island in Dutch East Indies, hitting her with all four of four torpedoes fired. Bowfin continued to attack the Asaka Maru, which had arrived to rescue Tsukikawa Maru's survivors, with four torpedoes, all of which missed. • The German submarine UIT-22 (formerly Italian submarine Alpino Bagnolini; Oberleutnant zur See Carl Wunderlich) was sunk by three British Catalina aircraft belonging to No. 262 Squadron SAAF in the Indian Ocean off of the Cape of Good Hope. UIT-22 was on her first patrol since the German takeover. According to records made available, this South African squadron was sent to the attack area after detailed instructions about the rendezvous point in the Indian Ocean had been deciphered.
