  • Submarine USS Narwhal began unloading cargo to small boats off Languyan on Tawi Tawi in the Philippines while also receiving eight passengers aboard. As the boats were delivering the first load of cargo to the beach, Narwhal was surprised by three Japanese destroyers patrolling the coast. Narwhal cleared the decks and made for open water as the destroyers opened fire. When the ocean depth would allow, Narwhal went deep for the ensuing depth charge attack.
