- Brigadier Orde Wingate's first Chindit expedition departed from Imphal in India. The expedition's mission was to create havoc through ambush and sabotage behind the Japanese lines in Burma. Meanwhile, the Anglo-American Combined Chiefs of Staff retracted a decision made earlier and diverted additional transport aircraft from the Mediterranean Sea theater of war to the Burma-India theater of war. - On the Imphal front in India, the Japanese 60th Regiment probed south towards a large store dump, where staff of the British 221st Advanced Ordnance depot, under continuous and heavy fire, repeatedly foiled the Japanese infiltration attacks for three days. - Abdul Hafiz of Indian 9th Jat Infantry Regiment led an attack by two sections of a platoon against a Japanese-held hill near Imphal, India. Despite being injured in the leg by enemy fire, he took out one machine position and led an attack on another; during the latter, he was fatally shot in the chest.
