ww2dbaseThe C.205 Veltro ("Greyhound") fighters were designed based on the C.202. They were sent to front line combat squadrons in Jun 1943, and were first used as escorts for Italian bombers attacking Allied ships off Sicily. On 2 Aug, the proved their worth during a dogfight where six C.205 fighters challenged a group of 20 P-38 and P-40 fighters; with the loss of only one fighter, the C.205s downed six American fighters and drove off the rest. When the Italian goverment capitulated in Sep 1943, 66 C.205 fighters were in service; 37 of them were surrendered to the Allies while the rest continued to fight under the banner of the puppet state in Northern Italy. Production continued in Northern Italy until the end of WW2, by which date a total of 265 were manufactured.
