ww2dbaseBelgian weapons designers Léon and Emile Nagant developed these revolvers in 1886 and sold them to Sweden, Norway, Poland, France, Greece, and Russia, among other countries. Of this list of countries, the Russian Army's use, under the designation of Nagant M1895, was the most famous in terms of WW2 historical importance. The Russians, who already had happily adopted the Mosin-Nagant M1891 rifles several years earlier, welcomed these new revolvers as the new standard side arms of army and police officers. Production of Nagant M1895 revolvers began in Liège, Belgium in 1895, but by 1898 it moved to Russia to suit the high demand, where they were made until 1945(at Tula arsenal from 1899 to 1945; at Izhevsk arsenal from 1943 to 1945). During WW2, they were often assigned to NKVD agents, who equipped them with sound suppression devices to carry out assassination missions. These weapons were generally favored, even becoming an object of honor when bestowed by high Communist Party officials, but field users of these revolvers often complained of the slow reload rate. About 2,000,000 Nagant M1895 revolvers were made, and the great abundance of these weapons meant they remained in use far after production ceased in 1945; for example, they were seen in service during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase

The Nagant Model 1895 Revolver had an unusual mechanism that, as the hammer was cocked, first turned the cylinder and then moved it forward, closing the gap betwe3n the cylinder and the barrel. As the cylinder moved forward, the mouth of the elongated cartridge case was pushed into a conical sections of the rear of the barrel and completed the gas seal; this incresas3e the muzzle velocity by 15-45m/s.
