ww2dbaseThe MK. III, MK.III A1, and MK. III A2 offensive concussion hand grenades that were effective in small enclosed spaces. The original variant grenades entered service in Mar 1918, featuring cardboard bodies that were sometimes painted black. The MK. III A1 variant grenades had black-painted laminated paper bodies containing 7 ounces (about 0.20 kilograms) of flaked TNT explosives. The MK. III A2 variant grenades had waterproof asphalt-inpregnated fiberboard bodies, including the top and bottom sides (MK. III and MK. III A1 had metal tops and bottoms), containing 8 ounces (about 0.23 kilograms) of TNT. During the Pacific War, these grenades were often used to clear bunkers and other small structures.Sources:
