The Vickers-Berthier light machine guns were designed by Adolphe Berthier, and the design was purchased for manufacturing by the firm Vickers. They could be fired in either fully automatic or semi-automatic modes. Manufacturing was slated to began in 1928, but was delayed after the British Army decided against adopting this model due to the emergence of better designs. Production kicked in high gear when these weapons were adopted by the Indian Army in 1933, and the deployment of Vickers-Berthier light machine guns to Indian cavalry units was complete by early 1935. Production of the Vickers-Berthier light machine guns ended in 1945.
