ww2dbaseThe M4 Survival Rifles were developed from American arms manufacturing firm Harrington & Richardson's existing M265 bolt-action sporting rifle design. They were adopted by the United States Army Air Forces during the war as part of the survival gear in case the aircraft would be shot down; the airmen had the option of using these sporting rifle-derived weapons to hunt wild animals for food. They remained in United States Air Force service until the 1950s, and park rangers of the United States National Park Service would use them into the 1960s. A total of 29,344 examples were built.
