ww2dbaseThe Type 92 air-cooled heavy machine guns were designed by Kijiro Nambu. They were made the standard heavy machine gun of the Japanese Army in 1932. They were typically crewed by twenty men and two horses; a fully assembled Type 92 machine gun could be carried, with poles, by four to six men, while the others carried the heavy tripod, ammunition, and spare barrels. During the Pacific War, Allied servicemen nicknamed them "woodpeckers" because of these machine guns' distinct sound. They were used at times as light anti-aircraft weapons. Production of the Type 92 machine gun ceased in 1941.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase

The type 92 Heavy Machinegun fired the 7.7mm
round, feed system 30 round metal strip.
The weapon had a characteristic sound when
fired. GI's nicknamed it the "Woodpecker"
I have a wall clock, with different types of
birds. When the clock strikes four, I hear
the woodpecker.

The weight of this weapon as given above is somewhat misleading. The 55 Kg guoted was in fact the total weight inclusive of a 27 kg tripod. The weight of the gun itself being approx. 29 Kg (still quite heave compared with similar machine guns of other nations)
