ww2dbaseThe Webley Mark IV service revolvers were originally designed in 1932 to compete for a British military request for a smaller caliber handgun than those in service during WW1. Although the competition was won by Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock (which spurred intellectual property debates between Enfield and Webley), production began nevertheless, with examples being sold to police forces of London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others. When WW2 began, Enfield was unable to produce enough service revolvers to meet the demands of war, thus a contract was issued for the production of Webley Mark IV handguns. After WW2, these weapons also saw military action during other conflicts including the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency. They were officially replaced by the Browning Hi-Power in 1963. Production ceased in 1978; during the design's production life, about 500,000 examples were built.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
