ww2dbaseThe Fabrique Nationale Model 1910 semi-automatic handguns were designed by American firearms designer John Browning; this design represented the first of his designs that would be manufactured only in Europe. On 28 Jun 1914, Gavrilo Princip used a FN M1910 handgun (serial number 19074) during the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which escalated into WW1. In 1922, the variant design M1910/22 was completed. The M1910/22 handguns each had a longer grip frame to house two additional rounds, and they were marketed specifically for military, police, and government service; they were popular as sidearms for European military officers during the years leading up to WW2. During the German occupation, production continued, supplying the German military and police, and to a lesser extent the minor Axis nations. Fabrique Nationale continued production of these weapons through the end of the war. In 1955, the Browning Arms Company in the United States began production as well, with the designation of Model 1955; aside from the markings, the American and the European variants were identical. In 1971, a new variant was introduced, featuring longer barrels and slides, adjustable sights, finger-rest magazines, and enlarged target grips; the M1971 was designed to comply with the American law Gun Control Act of 1968. Production of the M1910 handguns finally ended in 1983.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
