ww2dbaseThe Soviet 85 mm M1939 (52-K) anti-aircraft guns were developed by a team of engineers led by M. N. Loginov and G. D. Dorokhin. They entered service in 1939, and were organized into regiments of 16 guns each. They were used against German aircraft between 1941 and 1945, including horizontal bombers flying at medium and high altitudes; although the claim of 4,047 Axis aircraft shot down during the war was most likely over-exaggerated by Soviet anti-aircraft gun crews, the large number suggested the relative effectiveness of the weapon as well as the great quantity of such guns produced during WW2.In their secondary role as anti-tank weapons, 85 mm M1939 (52-K) anti-aircraft guns usually traveled with anti-tank shells. On a limited basis, the 52-K gun barrels were also mounted on vehicles such as the SU-85 tank destroyers and the T-34-85 medium tanks; such practice ceased as a larger caliber (122-millimeter) anti-tank gun barrel was purpose-developed.
After the war, most Soviet nations in Europe received 85 mm M1939 (52-K) anti-aircraft guns from Russia.

Captured 85mm anti-aircraft guns (52-k) were regarded by the Germans as prized trophies. Sufficient guns and ammunition were captured for the type to be taken into German service as the 8.5cm Flak M.39 (r ). Many were sent to German factories to be re-bored to accept standard 88mm ammunition. These were issued to home defence Flak batteries as the 8,8cm Flak M.39 (r ).
