ww2dbaseBased upon the British Carden-Loyd carrier (qv) the Renault UE Chenillette (English: small tracked vehicle) was designed in France to be a lightly armoured supply tractor for French infantry units. Weighing only about 2 tons its carrying capacity, contained within a storage container located behind the crew compartment, was limited. This container could be tipped automatically but normally a tracked trailer was towed that could carry about 300 kilograms of extra stores. The trailer was open and unprotected and could be used with or without tracks. The Renault UE was powered by a four-cylinder Renault engine mounted between the two members of the crew in their fully enclosed lightly armoured (7 millimetres) compartment. While a version mounting a machine gun for the co-driver was built, most UEs were actually unarmed and intended purely as supply vehicles for a range of equipment such as mortars, towed anti-tank guns, munitions, etc. Some 5,000 were built for the French Army from 1931 and following the fall of France large numbers were seized by the Germans, with many being reallocated to other Axis partners.
