ww2dbaseNamed for a fish just like many submarines of the era, Shad had her shakedown cruiser off the New England coast and held her first patrols in the Atlantic in places ranging from off West Africa to as far north as off Norway. In Sep 1943, she was transferred to the Pacific and performed six patrols by the end of the war. Notably, she performed patrols off the Japanese home islands and Taiwan near the end of the war, damaging a number of freighters (sinking of a small number of them) and disrupting Japanese logistics. She came off of the United States Navy's active list and became a training vessel in 1947. She was removed from that role in Apr 1960 and sold for scrap to Luria Brothers, Inc., Kearney, NJ in the same year.
