ww2dbaseDuring the day on 29 Mar 1941, Pola was struck by a British torpedo plane. At first only slowed, the remaining ships of her group sped away to port, but as Pola later reported that she was dead in the water, sister ships Zara and Fiume, along with four destroyers, returned to guard her. That night, aided by radar, a British fleet centered around three battleships arrived to attack. The out-gunned Italian group was quickly obliterated at relative close range. At the end of the engagement, Pola was sunk along with both of her sister ships in the battle. Two of the escorting destroyers were also destroyed.
