T24 Operational Timeline

15 Aug 1943 Before dawn, German seaplane tender Richthofen, torpedo boat T24, minesweeper M275, minesweeper M385, and Sperrbrecher 157 were caught by British cruiser Mauritius, destroyer HMS Ursa, and destroyer Iroquois in the Bay of Biscay off Les Sables d'Olonne, France. T24 laid a smoke screen and fired torpedoes at Iroquois, but all of them missed. British ships fired, sinking Sperrbrecher 157, and damaging all other ships; M385 was forced to beach to prevent sinking. HMS Iroquois suffered light damage in the engagement.
9 Jun 1944 German 8th Destroyer Flotilla (destroyer Z32, destroyer Z24, destroyer ZH1, and torpedo boat T24) departed Brest, France, sailing for Cherbourg. They were surprised and attacked by eight Allied destroyers. British destroyer HMS Ashanti sank ZH1 with torpedoes; ZH1 had previously been the lead ship of Dutch Gerard Callenburgh-class destroyers, captured by the Germans in 1940. Canadian destroyers HMCS Haida and HMCS Huron damaged Z32, forcing her to run aground on Île de Batz on the Brittany coast of France, wrecking Z32 in the process. Z24 and T24 successfully escaped the Allied attack. British destroyer HMS Tartar was damaged.
