ww2dbaseNamed after Gustavus Vasa Fox, a former Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy, the destroyer Fox was commissioned in 1920. Although she was a proven veteran having been to far away ports in countries like Turkey and Russia, she was of an older design by the time the European War started. Nevertheless, she was recommissioned on 25 Sep 1939 and performed escort and patrol duties along the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean Sea. She spent 1940 operating out of San Francisco on the Pacific coast, then out of Seattle between Jan 1941 and the start of the Pacific War. Her primary duty during the Pacific War was escort. She escorted ships between Seattle and Alaska in the first two years of the war, with three separate voyages to San Pedro in 1942. Between 3 Jul and 8 Sep 1942, she was modernized in Seattle. After the modernization, she returned to escort duties in the Pacific. In 1944, she began transporting troops between Seattle and the Alaskan bases of Kodiak and Adak. On 1 Oct 1944, she was reclassified AG-85, and was relegated to support roles. Fox was decommissioned in Nov 1945 and sold for scrapping on 12 Nov 1946.
