ww2dbaseItalian submarine Console Generale Liuzzi was launched in Sep 1939 and was quickly commissioned into service as Italy prepared to enter the European War. In Jun 1940, while on patrol in the Mediterranean Sea, she was spotted by a destroyer Allied group consisted of HMS Dainty, HMS Ilex, HMS Decoy, HMS Defender, and HMAS Voyager. Unable to escape and hopeless in challenging the combined firepower of the enemy ships, commanding officer Capitano di Corvetta Lorenzo Bezzi ordered his crew to abandon ship while preparing the ship for scuttling. Bezzi chose to go down with his ship. Bezzi would be awarded the Gold Medal posthumously for this action.
