ww2dbaseWesterwald was designed as a support ship, providing fuel, supplies, repair capabilities, and medical care capabilities to ocean-going warships and crews. She was commissioned into service in 1939 and was renamed Nordmark in late 1939. She spent most of the war off the Norwegian coast. In May 1945, she was captured by the British. Intended to be repaired and converted for service with the British Pacific Fleet, the end of the Pacific War came before the work was done, and she was placed in reserve instead. In Jan 1946, she was renamed Northmark. In Jul 1947, she was modernized and commissioned into service as HMS Bulawayo. She was decommissioned in 1950 and scrapped in Dalmuir, Scotland, United Kingdom starting in Oct 1955.
