ww2dbaseRikichi Ando was an instructor at the Japanese Army War College from 1924 to 1925. Between 1925 and 1927, he was the military attaché to India, then between 1932 and 1934 in a similar role to Britain. After a variety of field and staff positions, he became the commanding officer of the 5th Division in 1938. Later that year, he was assigned as the commanding officer of the 21st Army in China, where he remained until 9 Feb 1940, when he served as the commander-in-chief of the Japanese Southern China Area Army in Indochina for several months. In 1941, he retired from active service, but was quickly recalled to serve as the commander-in-chief of the Taiwan Army. In 1944, he was named the commander of the 10th Area Army based in Taiwan. From 1944 until the end of the war, he was the governor-general of Taiwan. On 25 Oct 1945, he represented Japan during the surrender ceremony in Taipei on 25 Oct 1945. He committed suicide while in prison in China.
