ww2dbaseGeorge Dominic Murray graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1910 and became a naval aviator in 1915. During WW2, he served as the commanding officer of USS Enterprise between 21 Mar 1941 and 30 Jun 1942, in which role he led the carrier in the Doolittle Raid and the Battle of Midway. He later became the commanding officer of US naval forces based in the Mariana Islands. At the end of the war, he accepted the surrender of the Caroline Islands aboard his flagship USS Portland. After the war, he commanded the First Fleet between Aug 1947 and Aug 1948. He retired from military service in 1951 at the rank of vice admiral. He passed away in 1956 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, United States. In 1961, he was posthumously designated the third recipient of the Gray Eagle Award as the most senior active naval aviator from 1947 until his retirement.
