ww2dbaseKuzma Nikolayevich Derevyanko was the chief of staff of the Soviet 35th Army and the Soviet representative at Douglas MacAthur's headquarters in the final months of the Pacific War. He observed MacArthur's stern opposition to a Soviet invasion of the Japanese island of Hokkaido near the end of the war, and advised his superiors in Moscow, Russia as so. Aside from Russian, he also spoke English and Japanese fairly well. He was among the three Soviet representatives present aboard USS Missouri to accept the Japanese surrender on 2 Sep 1945. He then traveled to Hiroshima and Nagasaki to, over the course of several days, survey the damage caused by the two atomic bombs. He passed away in 1954 from the effects of radiation poisoning. He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, Russia, and was posthumously made a Hero of Ukraine in 2007.
