I was born in Romania and defected to the United States on my own in 1985 at the age of 17. Soon thereafter, I joined the United States Marine Corps and those almost eight years were the hapiest of my life.
As a kid, I used to play in the wreck of what turned out to be a B25. Long delapidated and demilled, the aircraft was abandoned in the fields outside my home town of Turnu Magurele, on the Danube.
Recently, I found an 1,100 page report written partially in English, partially in German, and mostly in Romanian about the American POWs resulting from Tidal Wave, as well as consequent operations there in 1944.
The Report is written by then Major Unga, a Romanian flag officer attached to the Romanian Crown.
The report is extremely detailed in terms of the burial of the American bodies. To my consternation, 104 of these are still unaccounted for (aka, missing) as of 2021. I have been in touch with the Defense / MIA POW organization in Hawaii and DC.
To my further consternation, they are simply not interested.
As if all this wasn't enough, I found four unmarked graves of our airmen in 2015 on my last visit to Romania. Their burial was confirmed to me by three women and one man, all of whom actually buried the bodies in 1943 and 1944. Their ages were 94, 94, 93 and 95 respectively, in 2015.
I just don't know what to do with all this. I tried to translate a few pages, but it's monumental work and again, there are 1,100 pages.
I don't know what to do.
Thanks for your time.
