New Film on Kamikaze to Be Released in Japan on 12 May 2007
Ore wa, kimi no tame ni koso shini ni iku, or I Go to Die for You, is a film centered around the memory of Ms. Tome Torihama. Torihama ran a restaurant near the Chiran air base where many of the special attack pilots were trained during WW2. During the course of their training, many of the young pilots took Torihama as their mother figure. Governor Shintaro Ishihara of Tokyo, a writer before he entered politics, wrote the film's script based on interviews with Torihama. "From her I heard the true voices of the special attack forces," Ishihara said. "I want to leave a record of the beauty of the Japanese people who lived through brutal times." In the footsteps of the recent Japanese film Otoko-tachi no Yamato based on the book by Jun Henmi and Clint Eastwood's two-part series Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, this new film is the next in line that promises to deliver a modern interpretation of how lives changed as the result of the Pacific War.
