Looted Painting "Madonna with Child" Returned to Poland
Italian artist Alessandro Turchi painted "Madonna with Child" in the late 16th century. In 1823, it was listed among the large art collection of Prince Henryk Ludwik Lubomirski of Przeworsk, Poland, and it remained in the family collection until the WW2-era, when it was looted during the German occupation and became lost for some time. It was discovered during an auction in New York, New York, United States in the 1990s, and it disappeared again. In Jan 2022, agents of Poland's Ministry of Culture discovered it at an auction in Tokyo, Japan, and worked with the auction house to negotiate its return to Poland. On 31 May 2023, it was returned at the Polish Embassy in Tokyo, and the unnamed person in possession of the painting sought no compensation for the return. The Polish ministry said that the art will undergo conservation, and will likely be displayed at the Lubomirski Museum, currently under construction, in Wroclaw in southwestern Poland.
