Wreck of I-400 discovered off Hawaii
I-400 was a large submarine designed by the Japanese for the special purpose of carrying attack aircraft to hit distant targets such as New York or the Panama Canal to disrupt the American war effort in the rear areas. I-400, not having accomplished its purpose by the end of the war, was surrendered to the Americans in 1945, and was studied by the US Navy at Sasebo Japan until Dec 1945 and at Hawaii until May 1946. She was sunk by the US Navy on 4 Jun 1946 to deprive the Soviets the chance to study it as well. I-400's wreck was discovered by Dr. James Delgado, Dr. Hans Van Tilburg, and submersible pilot Terry Kerby on 1 Aug 2013, and the news was announced on 2 Dec 2013.
