New Pacific War Alternate History with WW2DB Contribution
Following the format of a panelist discussion, Jim Bresnahan gathered a group of historians, veterans, and WW2 enthusiasts to explore the "what if" scenarios of the war in his upcoming title Refighting the Pacific War. What if the Port Moresby attack was canceled so all six Japanese fleet carriers could be used for the Midway operation? Could Tarawa been bypassed in light of the heavy casualties incurred in the conquest? On Okinawa, was Simon Buckner's decision to attack the Japanese head-on the correct one? Bresnahan provided an informed look at how the Pacific War might have unfolded differently through these thought-provoking questions. The book is scheduled for release in Sep 2011.
WW2DB Managing Editor C. Peter Chen contributed to the book as one of the panelists.

Another "What if":Beginning of '42 Japan had by far the mightiest navy in the world. They could have taken advantage of this by occupying some of the islands between Eastern New Guinea and Australia and New Zealand an so isolating these areas from U.S.support.(I think of New Caledonia for instance)They could have done so when the Allies were still unprepared (January February beginning of March)They had the ships and troops available. If they had done so the Allies would have been in big trouble.
The conquering and occupying of Java was, at that period unnecessary. That could have been done at a later more convenient moment.Java was full of troops but there was hardly any material (ships, planes)to be a menace to the Japanese.
