WW2-era battle site found in Papua New Guinea

9 Jun 2010

Local residents near the Eora Creek battle site on the Kokoda Trail had known about it for decades, but very few had visited the site due to fear of ghosts. Trekker Brian Freeman, formerly an officer of the Australian Army, was among the first to visit this site since the 1940s when he reached the site on 23 Apr 2010. On 7 Jun 2010, he announced that he had discovered what was probably a Japanese field hospital which came under Australian attack. At that location, he had found an array of weapons, equipment, and other artifacts. Remains of Japanese soldiers were also found.

"It was as if time has stood still. We found ammunition running out in a line from the rifle that was dropped as the Japanese advanced to the rear," he said.

Freeman said that his team would be working with respective governments to repatriate the remains, while working to ensure that the site would be protected from unauthorized entry until proper research could be completed.
