Conical-roofed tower of the "German castle" could be seen in the distance.

One of Chuikov's first headquarters in Stalingrad, the Tsaritsyn bunker, was in this (Tsaritsa) gorge--dug into these sunlit bluffs, just outside the frame of view. A path at the near end of the small bridge led toward it.

Mistake--the Tsaritsyn Bunker used by Chuikov was in a bluff near Pushkinskaia Street. That street is not far beyond (the conical-roofed spire of) the German castle seen here in the distance.

Fascinating. I know it's been a long time since you posted, but if you're still around I would love to grab a pint and chat about this in person, you seem really knowledgeable.

This (flopped) image is from about 400 meters downstream of the railroad bridge (between Stations 1 & 2) across Tsaritsa Creek, looking down Tsaritsa Gully toward the Volga.
