the IS-7 was a prototype model, three were
built, the vehicle was 68 tons and armed w/
a 122mm gun.
In the 1950s the remaining IS series tanks were upgraded and part of Soviet Forces in
Eastern Europe. By the 1960s the last of the
tanks were transferred to the Red Army Reserves.
Some older models were dug in along the Soviet-Chinese border, and used as pillboxes
Other tanks were sold or given away to Soviet client States.
Over 9,000 variants of the IS series tank
were built. At one time the Chinese tried to reverse-engineer the IS tank ,but it was
cancelled in favor to produce the Soviet T-54
as the Chinese model type 122.
Today you can see a IS Tank on display at the
US Army Ordnance Museum Aberdeen Proving
Ground, Maryland USA
