UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: JUST PASSIN THROUGH
Vunakanau air field was bombed by Allied forces during the war, it had two landing strips, taxiways and revetments for the
bombers and fighters.
The Japanese Navy had G4M1s Betty bombers and A6M Zero fighters based there.
The base was defended by anti-aircraft guns and search light batteries. The Japanes Army also shared the base, and had Ki-45 Nick
Twin-engine, fighters, Ki-61 Tony and Ki-43 Oscar Single-engine fighters.
Low-level attacks continued the remaining flyable aircraft were flown to Truk, but AAA defences remained active to the end of the war, the based surrendered to Australian troops.
