Carrying spare parts on the tank was common for tankers in all armies. Carrying the heaviest parts on the front as extra armor was also common across all lines.

This PzKpfw III is an Ausf. G model.

The Africa Corps. palm tree swastika is visible next to the machine gun . I would imagine it's pretty hot inside the tank on a clear north African day not to mention noisy and claustrophobic .
