Info on photo: Aichi M6A1 Model 11 Seiran (Mountain Haze) entered service with the 631st.Kokutai during the winter of 1944-1945. Designed to operate from I-400 Class Submarines, an attack the Panama Canal W.W.II ended before the attack could be carried out. The attack force returned to Japan to surrender, the Seiran aircraft were rolled out of their hanger, and pushed overboard. Another version called Nanzan, was a land based aircraft with retractable landing gear. The only surviving Seiran is at the National Air & Space Museum, Washington D.C. No code name was ever issued to this aircraft.

Continued from my previous comment Feb 2009:

PROTOTYPE AIRCRAFT:

photo is early prototype of Seiran taken at the factory aircraft is carrying one 250kg bomb.
Prototype aircraft were painted orange the
character Ko on the fin assigned to the Kokugijtsusho or Aircraft Technology Arsenal,
the (I) meant it was the first airplane in this category and the (5) is for the fifth airplane under going trials.
Hinomaru with white outline applyed to the fuselage and wings. Camouflage was applied to aircraft once Allied aircraft started to fly over Japan the upper color was painted dark green with undersides in orange.
Combat Seirans were painted dark green upper surfaces with light gray undersurfaces.
A total of 28 Seiran aircraft were built before the end of the war.
Armament: 1x13mm machine gun for the observer
2x250kg bombs, or 1x850kg type 91 torpedo.

LAST OF HER KIND:

Today one Seiran is in existence, and is on display at the National Air & Space Museum, Washington D.C., USA.
