AM 203 was one of four Mustang Is delivered to Rolls-Royce at Hucknall. Known as Mustang Xs these aircraft were fitted with the Merlin 61 or 65 and four bladed airscrew to absorb the extra power, and featured small chin-type radiators of varying shape while retaining the ventral radiators as originally fitted. The Merlin installations were completed and the Mustang Xs successfully flown wityh in six weeks of the programme being initiated.
