This trooper could be a Sergeant or Corporal
rank denoted by the white lace around his collar, and on the shoulder straps.
He's armed with the G-43 semi-automatic rifle, that fired the Mauser 7.92mm round
this weapon was fed by a detachable box magazine that held ten rounds.
He's carrying the Mauser 98K ammo pouches that held 5-rounds in stripper clips.
The G-43 evolved from the G-41 semi-auto rifle. After WW2 the G-43 was used by the
Czechoslovak and East German Armies as well as the E.German border troops and police
(Volkspolizei) or VoPo. Other countries in post-war Europe used whatever German weapons were available.
I have a photo of West German border troops wearing WW2 Stalhelms and armed with G-43s.
