Photo of the P-61's SCR-720 radar it had a
range of 5 miles/8Km also had an (IFF link)
Identify Friend or Foe.

Radar operator located the target and gave
intercept instructions to the pilot, once within range, the pilot located the target
and fired using the 20mm cannons located in the belly or the top turret mounted 50 cal. machine guns or 20mm cannons.
Radar operator could also operate top turret

Early airborne radar units were big and
heavy with outside antennas the created drag.
They were improved and became smaller and
lighter. Improved models emerged that used
small parabolic dish designs.
