The nautical distance measurement of a “cable” is 240 yards. Thus, 4 cables would be 480 yards.

The additional information furnished by David regarding cable length is open to debate (depending which Navy arm you belong to) - what I would question is the arithmetic.
Whatever the result - it was still a pretty close observation point!

Captain Leach went down with HMS Prince of Wales on 10 Dec 1941 following a bomb and torpedo attack by IJN land-based bombers (G3Ms & G4Ms) on "Force Z" (PoW and HMS Renown plus destroyer escorts).
His son (later, Admiral Sir Henry Leach) witnessed his father's loss. In 1982 he was First Sea Lord. As such, he convinced Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher that a task force could retake the Falkland Islands.
