Note that Captain Layton is wearing a shoulder holster with sidearm. As Intelligence Officer on Nimitz’ staff, Layton was given the responsibility to act as Nimitz’ bodyguard during their trip to Japan since the admiral did not have a Marine security detail. Between Layton and Halsey is Rear Admiral Oscar Badger, commander of US Navy occupation forces in Japan. Note also that Dr. Kimura is wearing a white armband with green cross, an Allied requirement during the surrender process, and is not the similar white armband with red cross worn by United States medical personnel.
