The United States Navy caption for this photo dates it as 7 Aug 1943 at Espiritu Santo but this cannot be correct (Navy photos are frequently dated for when the image’s file was created). Admiral Ainsworth arrived at Espiritu aboard Honolulu on 16 Jul 1943 and on 17 Jul 1943, he flew out to Nouméa, New Caledonia for a conference with Admiral Halsey. He then flew on to Pearl Harbor. This photo was clearly taken at an anchorage and there is no reason to believe it was not Espiritu Santo. The Admiral is standing at the head of an accommodation ladder so it seems likely the photo was taken as he left the ship on 17 Jul 1943.
