The ship at left is marked as the USS Midway but would later be renamed USS St. Lo before being the first ship sunk by the new Japanese doctrine of ‘kamikaze’ special attacks on 25 Oct 1944 in the Battle off Samar during the Leyte Gulf operations. The center ship is marked as the HMS Begum and was due to be transferred to the Royal Navy as part of Lend-Lease but was renamed USS Natoma Bay prior to launch and served in the US Navy. The ship on the right is marked as the USS Manila Bay and served under that name her entire 3-year career.
