The Naval Torpedo Factory was the sole developer and manufacturer of United States torpedoes during World War I, the interwar period, and the runup to World War II. Their production rates could not keep up with wartime needs, however, so Naval Torpedo Stations were opened in Alexandria, Virginia and Keyport, Washington as well as subcontracting out a good deal of production to private industry. Goat Island is still the home of the United States Navy’s Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a direct descendant of the Naval Torpedo Factory.
