Well, we were half right. This image had been linked to the USS Laffey (Allen M Sumner-class – DD-724) which, as you say, had not been built by the date of the photograph. The photograph actually shows the USS Laffey (Benson-class – DD-459) which was sunk off Savo Island two months after this photo was taken. Our mistake was that this photo was linked to the wrong Laffey. This has now been corrected and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

The date of the photo, Sept 16, 1942 predates the Laffey's construction and main gun mounts are wrong. The ship shown is a Fletcher class DD.
