I am open to correction but I suspect that this GI is wearing the herringbone twill Utility cap (most frequently worn by enlisted ranks in rear areas) which is less often seen in pictures of the era than the smarter Garrison, or ‘overseas’, cap. Perhaps one of our American readers will be able to confirm.
