The U-Boat actually surrendered to the PBY Catalina patrol plane flying overhead. The PBY orbited until the surface vessels arrived. Note backward firing anti-submarine rockets mounted under the wing. These rockets would fire to counter the airplane’s forward motion so they would drop straight down from the point of release. These were used in conjunction with the Magnetic Anomaly Detection system.
