Note also the sensor boom for the Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) protruding from the tail of the airplane. This squadron began training with the MAD systems in the fall of 1942. While stationed at Port Lyautey, French Morocco (now Kenitra, Morocco) they worked with another PBY-MAD squadron and two US Navy Blimp Squadrons during Apr 1944 to virtually close the Straits of Gibraltar to German submarines. In the words of British Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, they “turned the Mediterranean into an Allied lake.”
