The “Murderers’ Row” Essex-class carriers appear in line with the camera and are (from back) Wasp, Yorktown, Hornet, Hancock, and Ticonderoga plus the cruiser Santa Fe (slightly forward of the line) and light carrier Cabot anchored with the repair ship Jason. The battleships at right are New Jersey and South Dakota (extreme right). The carrier Essex is also seen at left anchored with the repair ship Ajax. Most of the other ships in the foreground are destroyers and destroyer escorts along with destroyer tenders.

Immediately next to Essex in the upper left (closer to the camera) is the destroyer escort USS Tabberer.
